Carpet is a soft textile product that can be made of wool or various synthetic fibers. It is comfortable under foot and tends to warm a room. Carpet is manufactured in numerous colors and textures. The best carpets feature quality fibers and dense face piles. Carpets are mostly made in wide widths of 12 ft. to 15 ft. They are installed either as loose rugs or by fastening them to the floor wall-to-wall. Carpets perform better when installed with high density cushions or padding.
A continuous uncut surface that appears pebble like and casual. This style resists matting and crushing, does not show foot prints and is easy to maintain.
A velvet like surface that is soft, smooth and luxurious. Plush pile carpet is very popular and highlights footprints and vacuum sweeper marks.
A newer type of plush that features tightly twisted face pile fibers for more resilience to foot traffic and a tendency to minimize the appearance of footprints and vacuum sweeper marks.
There are many varieties of this style that combine plush and loop pile into a sculptured face pile or into a short tight pin dot or patterned carpet pile.
All of these types of carpet can be produced in various densities for residential and commercial use. Better carpets perform better, look new longer and cost more. Carpet is sold by the square foot or by the square yard. Pricing is shown as either "carpet only" or "carpet including installation and padding". It is always wise to upgrade to the best carpets and the best pads that your budget will allow.
Highly twisted yarns give friezes a contemporary, casual look and make it a smart choice for any active part of your home. Also friezes are less likely to show footprints or vacuum marks.
Bolder and more stylish than what you remember, the new shags often combine a variety of yarn thicknesses and textures to make a trendy and bold design statement in your home.
Wool, nylon, polyester, and polypropylene (olefin)
Wool continues to be the standard of excellence for carpet fibers. It is warm, durable, and naturally very stain resistant. However wool only performs well in heavy constructions that generally expensive, starting around $5.55 sq. ft. ($50 sq. yd.) installed.
Nylon is the strongest, most durable and most popular synthetic fiber available. It has been engineered to be resilient and stain resistant like wool. Major chemical companies who make nylon fibers have brand names like Stain Master, Wear Dated, and Anso fibers. These brand name fibers feature warranties against staining, matt and crushing of the face pile, and against wear. Be careful not to have unrealistic expectations with these warranties. No carpet is stain proof and no carpet will look like new forever. These warranties have limitations and require regular carpet care, maintenance and common sense. As you Roth salesperson about our warranties
Polyester is also a synthetic fiber like nylon. Polyester fiber is very strong, stain resistant and fade resistant and is often made from recycled plastic soft drink containers. Polyester has a proven performance record and is actually more stain resistant than nylon for really tough stains such as mustard and acne medication. Polyester carpets provide great performance, beauty and value.
Polypropylene is a very popular synthetic fiber that is made most often in looped pile carpets like berbers. It is very soil resistant to food and beverage stains but oil-based stains can be difficult. It is the best value of all synthetic fibers but it is also the least resilient.
All of the synthetic fibers perform best in heavy pile constructions. All have performance and anti-stain warranties that should be reviewed thoroughly.
Carpet is still the lowest cost floor covering per sq. ft. that you can buy.
Carpet is the easiest do-it-yourself floor, looselay, glued, stapled, or stretched.
Carpet covers many uneven existing floor conditions.
Carpet is a low maintenance product, vacuum often, professionally clean every 12 to 18 months.
Carpet is warm underfoot and quiet.
Carpet does not emit potentially harmful fumes.
Heavy carpet construction, good fibers, and dense (not thick) pads all are necessary for carpet to keep its new look the longest.
All carpets begin to change appearance as soon as they are in use. Pile crushes in walk ways. Soil build up and pile crushing make carpets look different from their new look.
No carpet is stain proof or crush proof.
Carpet manufacturing warranties are limited warranties. Be careful not to expect too much from stain resistance, crush resistance and wear warranties.
Dense carpet padding helps extend the life of your carpet purchase. Padding is made in various densities from 1 lb. to over 20 lbs. Most pads are made from polyurethane, some are felt, and some are rubber. No padding should be thicker than 1/2 inch.
